Rest day in Kununurra

Friday 17th June

We felt we needed to have a good walk and a catch up day with shopping and washing etc, so decided not to go to Lake Argyle as originally planned, but do some local sites.

On our walk around the town, we saw some great views of Crimson finches, right beside us. They are just so bright and really beautiful! The walk also led us to a good coffee, which was a bonus! We saw a better side of Kununurra, and enjoyed the break.

After lunch we went to look at Ivanhoe Crossing, where the road crosses the Ord River  about 10km out of town – this was the original road to Wyndham!!

Despite warnings about crocodiles, (someone was attacked there in 2006) two people were fishing, paddling in the calm areas etc....hard to believe. One of the fishermen said "They're on the go, I got 11"  Apparently this is a popular fishing spot for the locals.

With the available irrigation, there are some Mango farms, (more around Katherine) but a lot of Sandalwood plantations – the new industry here. Bananas have been tried, but were too often wiped out by cyclones.

The sunset was pretty, over the lake beside our camp.
