Kakadu Day 1 - Gunlom (Waterfall Creek)

Wed 1st June

It is about 240 km from Nitmiluk NP to Gunlom in Kakadu NP, via Pine Creek. Pine Creek is a renowned hot spot for Hooded Parrots, which we have never seen. We went to all the known spots around the town, but no luck....so we consoled ourselves with an ice-cream, and will try again on the way to the Kimberley.

On checking re conditions of the creek crossings at Mary River Roadhouse, we found Jim Jim falls and Twin falls are still both closed, but we didn’t cross any water over the road in to Gunlom.

The waterfall here is absolutely awesome! It was made somewhat famous as one of the locations for the shooting of Crocodile Dundee. The waterfall drops into a crystal clear pool of about 10 acres, with a sandy bottom. We both had a swim!
At the plunge pool, we noticed a Crimson Finch.....absolutely spectacular and a first for us both. Not much of a shot but you’ll get some idea of the colour.

We saw some interesting plants along the road into Gunlom,

and the road and creek crossings were really pretty.

Around the plunge pool we noticed some beautiful little wildflowers that were really quite exquisite on closer examination.

And on a nearby walk, a creeper with an enormous mauve pea flower

and waterlilies on the billabong.

Another perfect day, probably about 26 degrees but feels hotter, and still relatively cool nights.

  1. Hi C&R,
Thank you for all the gorgeous visuals (camera's working well) and your interesting descriptions of all facets of your trip. I am enjoying the journey with you. It's obvious you are having a great time, a fact that jumped off the page as you described the Jim Jim Falls, because I am now very envious of your swim in that beautiful crystal clear pool!!! Enjoy...Love Yvonne
