Kakadu Day 2- Gunlom (Waterfall Creek)

Thursday 2nd June

We headed off early for a climb up the escarpment to the top of the waterfall. It was quite steep, but worth the effort and certainly not to be missed!
It is just so beautiful up there – the creek is a series of crystal clear pools and the views are spectacular. Unfortunately my camera was out of charge, so no photos!
We walked along the top for quite a way, and there are sections of sand and Spinifex and some monsoon rainforest... amazing diversity in habitat.
I thought of SKD on her walking holiday in the centre, with all the rock climbing...glad I wasn’t going to do it again tomorrow!

Brigit Bradtke (the e-book we have) says that if you go out early, by the time you get home the birds have gone quiet, the crocodiles have gone under water, and the tourists are all arriving in numbers!
But we are lucky to be here early in the season because there are not busloads of tourists - Quite a few European young back-packers who are delightful, a few oldies like us, and a few families. At the waterfall pool there were only a few people each time we went there and it is not at all hectic.

Then late in the afternoon we went for a walk through a recently burned area that extends from the plunge pool, around a billabong to the South Alligator River. There was evidence of Water Buffalo (the ranger called it damper on the track !) Apparently there are also some cattle that come in at times as well.

And we saw about 20 wild horses.

One of the birds that we have seen a lot here are the Forest Kingfishers.
