To Leonora

22/8/12

The scenery on the way to Leonora was really attractive – it gradually changed from semi-arid woodland to arid spinifex country,

and we stopped to look at  many different wildflowers.

There was lots of evidence of mining, past and present … no road-kills at all, very few birds…warm (20 degrees at 4.30!) but very unpleasant wind.

We went to Lake Bollard to see 51 metal sculptures of figures,

They are widely spaced out across a huge, dry salt pan, in the middle of nowhere, 53 km off the main road –the artist is Antony Gormley. Apparently they represent the people of Menzies…. An extraordinary concept.

After setting up in the caravan park at Leonora ( a desolate place) we went to look at Malcolm Dam, in search of birds – but again, very little birdlife to be found.
Couldn't get enough cover to publish the blog hence the delay.
